Exhibition overview
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of photography, the Fondation Cartier presents a selection of works that have made up its photography collection since 1984. This selection seeks to sketch out the strong lines of the collection, but bets just as much on the pleasure of using contrasts and oppositions; nonetheless, this commitment has the advantage of taking stock of and highlighting the trends of creative, contemporary photography and summarizing its aesthetic situation.
The images chosen demonstrate a rupture, a gap, that disrupt our perspective and cause a crack in our perception of the world. They are often images or composite works combining various techniques and different languages. Their confrontation refutes the theories of those devoted to the medium’s specificity; it allows for a necessary link and reciprocal influences to be established between the photographic experience and the approach of certain visual artists, which can both give rise to fascinating mixes.
