Exhibition overview
Inaugurated in Düsseldorf in May of 1988, then presented in Vienna in October of 1988, “Une exposition/An Exhibition” is being shown for the first time in France at the Fondation Cartier. The exhibit brings together the work of Jochen Gerz since 1968 on new mediums such as photos, texts, installations, and video, bringing both words and images into play.
While it gathers together works produced over a relatively long period, this exhibit is not intended to be retrospective. Even though it presents the same pieces throughout the various locations in which it is installed, each time the exhibit creates a distinctive situation through the artist’s work on the location itself.
An exhibition with a dialectical structure that highlights the taste of Jochen Gerz’s critical innovation. The in situ concept exposes the common points and differences of the exhibit according to the locations it traverses: from museums built in the 19th and 20th centuries, baroque palaces, and military architecture from World War II all the way to the Fondation Cartier.
