About the exhibition
From December 12, 2024, to March 16, 2025, Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain present the exhibition Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier, dedicated to the cinematographic works of Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha and Eryk Rocha; Raymond Depardon and Claudine Nougaret; Paz Encina; Morzaniel Ɨramari; PARKing CHANce; Artavazd Pelechian; Andrei Ujica; Agnès Varda; Jonathan Vinel; Wang Bing.
The exhibition Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier stems from the Fondation Cartier's 30-year interest in cinema, which has resulted in lasting relationships with filmmakers and the most varied forms of support for the art of filmmaking.
With this exhibition, Triennale Milano intends to open a specific project on cinematographic production and language, and its unique ability to interact and cross-pollinate with other languages of contemporary creativity.
The exhibition is structured around the ongoing display of the cinematographic work of twelve artists and film directors from all over the world: hailing from different generations and geographies, and shaped by different backgrounds and experiences, the featured artists offer their own personal reflection on the present and past.
In addition, but as an integral part of the project, Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier join forces with the roman based Fondazione Piccolo America - Cinema Troisi to create an intriguing daily program of screenings in the exhibition space and talks for all audiences curious about contemporary cinema and art. This series of Cinema Nights with key players from the world of contemporary cinema gives the audience a chance to gain further insight into the pressing issues explored by Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier.
Exhibition Pathway
Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier is designed as a pathway punctuated by encounters with works steeped in poetry and lyricism, driven by the desire to reflect the world through moving images.

The exhibition presents the cinematographic works by 12 artists, some of which are presented for the first time in Italy: The Falling Sky (2024) by Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha and Eryk Rocha, Au Bonheur des Maths (The joys of maths) (2011) by Raymond Depardon and Claudine Nougaret, El Aroma del Viento (The scent of the wind) (2019) by Paz Encina, Mãri hi – The Tree of Dream (2023) by Morzaniel Ɨramari, Decades Apart (2017) by PARKing CHANce, Notre Siècle (Our Century) (1982) and Vie (Life) (1993) by Artavazd Pelechian, The autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu (2010) by Andrei Ujica, Le Triptyque de Noirmoutier (2004-2005) by Agnès Varda, Martin Cries (2017) by Jonathan Vinel and 15 Hours (2017) by Wang Bing.
The films cast their gaze on the contradictions of the contemporary world, highlighting the fragility of systems divided by conflict and in which, nevertheless, beauty and hope find a way to express themselves and resist. Il nostro tempo, CinéFondationCartier is a journey through intimate and universal images, a fast-paced succession of astronauts in space, new born, scientists, dictators, industrialised cities and pristine forests, wild beaches and alienating factories.
Intimate and universal landscapes blend into one, in an orchestra of moving images, and each of the featured artists plays a part in writing our collective history through their own experience of the world.
Some of these films belong to the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain collection, others have been presented as part of its programs or produced with its support.
The exhibition is conceived as a sensorial journey that enhances the technical and aesthetic qualities of the cinematographic works. Through short films or exceptionally long pieces, each one benefits from its bespoke space, designed by bunker arc, Milan to ensure the best viewing experience while challenging the traditional rules of museum visits and encouraging visitors to stop, take their time and return.
The pathway reflects the relational architecture within which the works are presented: by drawing upon the key elements of cinema as a medium – light, dark, movement – each film heralds the next or echoes the last, inviting visitors to find their own way around without constraint.
Cinema Nights and Screening Program
Triennale Milano and Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain together with Fondazione Piccolo America - Cinema Troisi present a program of screenings and talks.
The Cinema Nights constitute a public program made up of free-admission talks, with key players from the world of contemporary cinema. Organized in different spaces of Triennale, they give the audience a chance to meet with renowned film directors and gain insight into the pressing issues explored by the films featured in the exhibition.
Each of the Cinema Nights marks the beginning of a thematic film program shown in the cinema room inside the exhibition space: Stories in History: cinema and the archival image; Rural; The Four Elements: four movies by Werner Herzog; I see myself, others see me: society and thirst for recognition; The second-last in the world; Under the same sky.
This dynamic sequence of talks and thematic film programs gives rhythm to the exhibition and makes it particularly engaging. It is also an invitation for visitors to return to Triennale multiple times, offering them unprecedented perspectives and unique opportunities for dialogue and interaction.
On December 13, the first Cinema Night will bring together exhibition artist and filmmaker Andrei Ujica and Italian filmmaker Pietro Marcello inaugurating the first film program: Stories in History: cinema and the archival image, running from December 14 until January 7.
