An in-situ creation based on researches carried out by Jeanne Vicerial and Julia Cima over 3 years, including 4 months in residence at Villa Kujoyama
As part of the exhibition that the Fondation Cartier is dedicating to the work of Olga de Amaral, a key figure in Fiber Art, the Nomadic Nights invite visual artist and textile designer Jeanne Vicerial to imagine a unique performance surrounded by two artists of her choice: dancer and choreographer Julia Cima and composer and cellist Gaspar Claus. Through their respective practices, the three artists spin the metaphor of the rope – that of fabric, musical instrument or human muscle – to experiment at the heart of the exhibition spaces.
The three of us have chosen to connect through the idea of thread and weft: the thread for my presences that will be in space, the string of Gaspar’s cello and the fascia (membranes that surround muscles and organs) for Julia, as well as the cords that will constitute her clothing sculpture. We wish to pay homage to Olga de Amaral’s Brumas by weaving in space a “weft” inspired by the power and richness of the fascia, a large canvas where each organ resonates with the rest of the body through structural and emotional projections. - Jeanne Vicerial
This project, resulting from the residency of Jeanne Vicerial and Julia Cima at the Villa Kujoyama in 2024, benefits from the support of the French Institute, the French Institute in Japan and the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation.
Biographies
Born in 1991, Jeanne Vicerial turned to clothing design when she was a teenager. After studying at ENSAD – École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs, she began research in clothing design, questioning contemporary clothing design methods and proposing an alternative to the custom/ready-to-wear dichotomy linked to the fast fashion system. At the same time, she began an artistic approach that led her to found the design studio Clinique vestimentaire. Developing new principles of textile creation, she draws inspiration mainly from muscle fibers in order to create her own weaves.
Julia Cima graduated from the CNSMDP in 1995. She has performed for Odile Duboc, Boris Charmatz, Myriam Gourfink, Alain Michard, Laure Bonicel, Benoit Lachambre, Philippe Ulysse, Gildas Milin and Mathilde Monnier. She has created and performed two solo programs, two group pieces as well as commissions for festivals in France and abroad. At the same time, she works in palliative care in Paris, opens a café, teaches movement at the school of the Théâtre national de Bretagne in Rennes. She put dance on hold for eight years to train in fasciapulsology and open a practice in Paris and then in the provinces. In 2022, she responded to a proposal for a creation for the Fondation Martell in Cognac and collaborated with Jeanne Vicerial for the first time, the beginnings of a bond that still lasts.
From his classical training to his escapades in the electronic world or film music, the unclassifiable cellist Gaspar Claus shakes up the boundaries between genres and sounds. Improvising alone, wandering with his father, the flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler, member of the cello trio VACARME, or venturing into film music scores, Gaspar Claus frequents all aesthetics with an insatiable appetite. This open-mindedness allows him to assert an ever richer and more colorful vocabulary, and to collaborate with countless artists from different scenes (Rone, Sufjan Stevens, Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Peter Von Poehl, Matt Elliott…).
