About the publication
From fakes to forgery, copies to new editions, and simulation to substitute, the exhibition Vraiment faux at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 1988 dealt with a vast, ambiguous subject that runs from the sordid to the sublime. With the help of official institutions, firms, and legal entities or beneficiaries who were victim to imitations, the exhibition brought together characteristic examples of fakes. Working in collaboration with top-level scientists, another section covered the technological advances of the 1980s and showed how the artists conducted their research into illusion. The exhibition catalog portrays this technological and artistic research and serves as a bona fide record of the state of forgery in France at the time. |
