About the publication
Through short narrations, little plays in which he is the sole actor, and self-filmed series, Pierrick Sorin portrays the failures of day-to-day life, from blunders to Freudian slips and subconscious gestures. In his videos he expresses a desire for renewal coupled with a tragic impossibility of achieving it, highlighted by the looped broadcast which seems to systematically and irremediably state that there is no way out.
This VHS tape is a visual testimony of La Bataille des Tartes, a video installation produced and presented by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in1994, with an ironic commentary by Pierrick Sorin. La Bataille des Tartes is a variation on the theme of a classic silent movie gag that rapidly becomes tragic and insufferable. Pierrick Sorin cultivates the ambivalence of each situation and puts the viewer on a seesaw swinging between dynamism and lethargy, tragedy and comedy.
