About the publication
Born in China in 1957, Cai Guo-Qiang studied theater arts at the Shanghai theater school before moving to Tokyo. A series of gunpowder paintings and large-scale explosions rapidly established him as the most active contemporary artist in Japan.
Cai Guo-Qiang’s now lives in New York, where his work provides thoughts on the cultural melting pot and the relationship the United States maintains with the rest of the world, in particular China.
The catalog published for the exhibition presented at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2000 retraces all his projects in pictures, symbols of a new cross-cultural dialogue that shatters the borders between East and West.
