About the publication
Born in 1955 in Saint-Étienne, Bernard Piffaretti’s work is marked by a demanding and endlessly renewed exploration of the painting process. He proceeds by fracturing the white space of the canvas with a vertical line : on one side of the dividing line is the “motif,” on the other is its answer.
Under the heading Come and Go, which comes from the title of a play by Samuel Beckett, this catalog brings together about 40 paintings realized between 1997 and 2000. They are part of a continuum, recharging each other in a “come and go” movement that keeps on producing painting.
