About the publication
The exhibition Un art populaire, organized by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2001, was the upshot of several meetings: firstly between popular Brazilian art and the discovery of its wealth and modernity; then between artists from the neighboring villages of Santa Fe, who managed to develop a highly unique and original body of work in a context where popular art is still very present; lastly, between artists on the contemporary scene adopting popular art forms in their work and thus portraying their thoughts on it. Popular art is about man, his daily life, and aspirations. It expresses his essence and is crafted by his hand.
In the exhibition catalog, each artist expresses their definition of this art and analyses the relationship between popular and contemporary art through their perception of the world and creation.
