About the publication
Invited by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in 2004, the celebrated fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier steered clear of a retrospective or a simple presentation of clothes and chose to realize a fantasy, the fruit of a meeting between two forms of craft : couture and bakery. The exhibition Pain Couture by Jean Paul Gaultier is the dream of a couturier who only has flour, water, salt, and yeast to create with, but also that of a baker who wanted to become a couturier.
The exhibition catalog goes behind the scenes of the project and plunges into the workshops of bakers and couturiers alike : the gestures, the tools, the special materials, and know-how of these two trades are paralleled to create a sensory realm where two worlds meet.
