About the publication
Philosopher and art critic Alair Gomes, who was assassinated in Rio in 1992, had devoted himself since the 1970s to elaborating an incomparable photographic corpus, the ultimate, passionate expression of his research.
The book published for the Alair Gomes exhibition in 2001 at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain was conceived as a huge erotic painting dedicated to beauty and the naked male body. Stolen on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, shot from his apartment window with a telephoto lens, then extensively reworked and organized into sequences according to a rhythm and a “visual music,” these images form a fresco with extraordinary visual scope.
